The Old Mentonians made the long trip out to Werribee to take on the second placed team that was coming off a twenty goal win the previous week. The Panthers put in a brave effort for three quarters but were eventually overrun by the home team.
The Old Mentonians started had first use of quite a strong wind but allowed Werribee to kick the first two goals of the game. The Panthers then controlled play for most of the rest of the quarter but that was not really reflected on the scoreboard. A three point deficit at quarter time meant the Old Mentonians would have a big task in the second quarter.
Werribee had more numbers at the contests in the early part of the second quarter and kicked the first four goals of the quarter. The Old Mentonians worked their way into the contest with the backline holding up well, led by John Thompson who was providing a running option. Turnovers though proved costly and the Panthers went to half time trailing by 28 points.
The third quarter has proven to be a weakness for the Old Mentonians for most of the season but that was not the case on this occasion. The Panthers showed great commitment and dominated the quarter with the wind right from the first centre clearance that ended with a mark and goal to Chris Graham. The Old Mentonians still made some poor turnovers but they had enough of the ball to kick five goals to one and only trail by two points at three quarter time. The home side started a melee on the siren and it looked like they might be rattled.
A big effort was required into the wind in the last quarter and the Old Mentonians applied plenty of pressure early. Werribee managed to kick the first goal but the Panthers replied quickly with another goal to Chris Graham. The Old Mentonians seemed to run out of legs from that point as Werribee controlled the rest of the quarter to be comfortable winners.
The season finishes for the Old Mentonians’ Senior side when they take on North Old Boys at the Keysborough Playing Fields. The boys will be looking to finish off the year with a good performance in front of a big crowd from the luncheon.

The Old Mentonians went to Werribee knowing that it would be a tough game as the home side needed to win to stay in the race for fourth spot. Given the form that had been displayed the previous week, the Panthers made the trip with confidence.
Werribee had first use of the wind and by quarter time had built a 22 point lead. That was not a bad result for the Old Mentonians though given that it was possibly a five goal wind. The Panthers did well offensively in the second quarter kicking six goals. Kyle Tickell was again dominant in the ruck and Chad Twentyman and Matthew Jenkins were good targets up forward.
The Old Mentonians worked hard into the wind in the third quarter and by the twenty minute mark had restricted Werribee to just one goal. The home side managed to kick four late goals but at 34 points down the Panthers were not quite out of touch.
Needing a strong attacking burst to come from behind, the Old Mentonians seemed to run out of legs as Werribee finished full of running. The Panthers now need to win next week and rely on Werribee and Fitzroy losing to make the finals.
