After two convincing wins, the Old Mentonians Under 19's ventured out to Monash in what they knew would be a tough match. Minus their schoolboys, the Panthers were determined to start the season with three wins.
The Old Boys got off to a good start with Elliot "Classy" Macquire slotting home the first of his four goals early in the first. Mr Potential Davey Howard also looked at home as he continually provided a target for the Panther on-ballers. However tragedy would strike, as the Old Mentionian's star centre half-back, Sammy Kent, went down with a broken shin. This threw the structure of the Panther's around, and as such the midfield rotations were limited for the remainder of the day.
The injury to
In what can be described as the Panther's best quarter of the season, the Old Boys came out firing in the third term. With Nick Boyd's deft touches in the ruck, and the big boys Hopkins and Lumsden in the forward line, the Panthers kicked six goals to Monash's two in the premiership quarter.
From there the Panthers never looked back. The Old Mentonians kept their heads throughout the last, and despite being undermanned for much of the day, they were able to hold on for a memorable 19 point victory.
